Italy
Kids Will Like: Pizza and pasta of all varieties, of course.

If They Like That, Try: Polenta ( cooked cornmeal, like grits) plain, buttered or topped with meat sauce; Risotto; fritatta (like quiche); gnocchi (potato pasta)

Japan
Kids Will Like: All types of noodles (ramen, udon, soba) plain or in soup; tonkatsu (breaded, fried pork cutlet); tempura (batter fried meats, fish or veggies); yakitori (grilled chicken)

If They Like That, Try: Onigiri ( stuffed, rolled rice balls); gyoza dumplings; cooked maki sushi.

UK And Ireland
What They’ll Like: Fish and chips; pot roast; tea sandwiches; shepherd’s pie

If They Like That, Try: Cornish pasty (hand pie stuffed with a meat filling); Welsh rarebit (melted cheese served over toast); sausage rolls

Sweden
What They’ll Like: Köttbullar (meatballs); Raggmunk (potato pancakes); Beef Stroganoff

If They Like That, Try: Jansson’s temptation (potato casserole); Kroppkakor (pork-filled potato dumplings); Sausage Stroganoff, Ärtsoppa (traditional pea soup)

Mexico
What They’ll Like: Tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas — just remember they aren’t exactly the same as they are here.

If They Like That, Try: Chilaquiles (smothered tortilla chips); chalupas (corn flour coups with various fillings); flautas (fried, rolled tacos); molletes (sliced bread topped with refried beans and cheese); sopes (thick corn tortilla topped with meat and veggies)

Belgium
What They’ll Like: Frites (French fries); waffles (there are many kinds — Brussels waffle, Liège waffle, stroopwafel); Carbonade (beef stew)

If They Like That, Try: Stoemp (mashed potatoes with vegetables); Waterzooi (fish or chicken stew); Garnaalkroketten (shrimp-stuffed potato croquettes); Flamiche aux Poireaux (quiche-like tart)

France
Kids Will Like: Omelettes (usually served at lunch or dinner); crepes; jambon-beurre (ham and butter sandwiches, sometimes with cheese); poulet roti (roasted chicken); pasta (widely available at cafes); steak frites (steak and fries); Bœuf bourguignon (beef stew)

If They Like That, Try: Croque Monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwich); quiche; flammekueche (Alsatian “pizza” with cheese, onion and bacon); coq au vin (stewed rooster); socca (chickpea flour pancake)

Germany
What They’ll Like: Wieners (hot dogs); Buletten (meatballs); Knödel (potato dumplings); Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes); Sauerbraten (pot roast); Spätzle (noodles)

Turkey
What They’ll Like: Köfte (meatballs); Şiş kebab (chunks of meat grilled on a skewer); Sade pilav (simple rice pilaf)
